Raymond Delamarre 1948 bronze sailing medal with box

The obverse of this lovely medal by Raymond Delamarre is quite detailed. There is a mermaid blowing into a shell beneath a yacht in full sail with putti and wind swirling around the sails. It is impressed "Et Vela Secundi Intendunt Zephyri" around the top edge and signed "Raymond Delamarre 1948" at the bottom. The reverse depicts 5 ships from various centuries sailing around the centre with entwined fish at the bottom and "Yatching Gale Buccaneer A" within the circle of ships. The reverse is also signed "Raymond Delamarre". The rim is stamped "Bronze" and has the Cornupoia mark for the Monnaie de Paris.
Presented in a dark maroon box.

Raymond Delamarre
(1890–1986)
French sculptor and medalist.
Studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was attached to the studio of Jules-Félix Coutan.
He was conscripted from 1911 to 1913 and served in the First World War.
1919 awarded the Prix de Rome sharing it with Alfred Janniot and went to Rome until 1924.
In 1925 he worked with Michel Roux Spitz on the project at the Suez Canal and then on a water faountin for the Exposition des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. And various other prestigious bronze commissions.
1926-27 he worked on the Mowgli ronde-bosse.
He produced work for la Normandie ocean liner completing the same in 1935.
1936 appointed Chevalier of the Legion of Honour
In 1937 he competed his great work in bronze for the Palais de Chaillot creating three 4-metre-high figures symbolizing Philosophy, the Visual Arts and the Arts.
1961 to 1973, he managed the business of the "Art Sacré" studios in Paris working with Maurice Denis and Georges Desvallières.
In 1963 he created the last of his great "monumental" works - 12 reliefs in stone for the entrance of the chapel of Nantes's new hospital, a building designed by Michel Roux Spitz, after which he worked on a number of busts, statues, medals and plaque until his death on 28 February 1986
